Description
Château Petrus
Château Petrus is without doubt the crown jewel of Pomerol and one of the most celebrated wines in the world. Unlike the classified growths of the Médoc and Saint-Émilion, Petrus has achieved legendary status purely on the strength of its terroir and its wines. The estate covers a modest 11.4 hectares on the plateau of Pomerol, where the vines are planted almost exclusively to Merlot. Its uniqueness lies in the deep blue clay subsoil—found only here in Bordeaux—which endows the wines with a singular combination of richness, power, and refinement.
The history of Petrus dates back to the 18th century, but its rise to international acclaim began in the mid-20th century thanks to Madame Loubat, the visionary owner who believed in the extraordinary potential of this terroir. Working closely with the Moueix family, she positioned Petrus as a symbol of rarity and excellence, served at royal banquets and even at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II. Over time, Petrus became synonymous with prestige, and today it continues to be managed with uncompromising standards of quality, producing one of the most sought-after wines in the world.
Each bottle of Petrus is the result of meticulous attention in the vineyard and cellar: low yields, careful hand-harvesting, and precision winemaking aimed at preserving the purest expression of Merlot. The style of Petrus is unmistakable—deeply colored, intensely aromatic, layered with notes of black fruit, violets, truffle, and cocoa, with a texture that combines voluptuous richness and silk-like finesse. Capable of extraordinary longevity, Petrus has the rare ability to offer both immediate sensual pleasure and profound complexity with age.
Produced in very limited quantities and cherished by collectors, Petrus is not merely a great Bordeaux—it is a legend, embodying the very highest expression of terroir, tradition, and timeless excellence.
