Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, drawn largely from the Carruades plateau adjoining the grand vin’s vineyards and from younger vines on the estate.
It carries a higher proportion of Merlot than the grand vin, which makes it rounder and readier — the Lafite signature of cedar and graphite, at a scale you can open on a weeknight.
2004 was a classical, generous Bordeaux vintage, and at twenty years old this is fully resolved: redcurrant and cedar over pencil shavings and tobacco, supple and mid-weight on the palate, closing fresh and cedary.
