Description

Champagne Krug Grande Cuvée – 171ème Édition Brut

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition is the purest expression of the House of Krug’s founding vision: to create, every year, the finest possible Champagne, independent of the constraints of vintage. Rather than seeking to capture a single harvest, Krug aims for a timeless ideal of Champagne, built on depth, complexity and harmony.

This 171st Edition is composed around the 2015 harvest, a year marked by contrast and intensity, complemented by an extraordinary selection of reserve wines from Krug’s unique library. In total, the blend brings together 131 wines from 12 different vintages, stretching back to the year 2000. Each wine is vinified separately in small oak casks, allowing every parcel and grape variety to retain its individual character before contributing to the final composition. The Champagne then rests for nearly seven years in Krug’s cellars, gaining texture, depth and seamless integration.

In the glass, the wine shows a radiant golden colour animated by fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is immediately expressive and layered, opening on notes of freshly baked brioche, toasted hazelnuts and almond pastry, followed by citrus zest, yellow apple and ripe pear. With aeration, subtle hints of honey, nougat and delicate floral notes emerge, reflecting the long ageing and the complexity of the blend.

On the palate, the Champagne is generous yet precise, combining power with remarkable finesse. The texture is broad and silky, carried by flavours of orchard fruit, lemon curd and light spice, interwoven with notes of toasted bread and marzipan. The finish is long, chalky and saline, leaving a lasting impression of freshness and elegance. Despite its richness, the wine remains vibrant and perfectly balanced, making it equally compelling now and capable of ageing gracefully for many years.

Krug Grande Cuvée is above all a gastronomic Champagne. It excels at the table, pairing effortlessly with refined seafood such as lobster or scallops, noble fish like turbot, and delicate poultry or veal dishes. It also matches beautifully with aged cheeses, revealing new facets as the meal unfolds.

Maison Krug

Founded in 1843 in Reims by Joseph Krug, Maison Krug occupies a singular place in the world of Champagne. From its origins, the House has followed a radically different path, guided by one unwavering principle: Champagne should never be limited by the variability of nature. Joseph Krug believed that the true essence of Champagne could only be achieved through meticulous blending of wines from different years, vineyards and grape varieties, each vinified and aged separately.

This philosophy remains unchanged today. Krug is one of the rare Champagne houses to vinify every plot individually in small oak barrels, preserving the identity of each wine before blending. The House has built an exceptional reserve wine library, patiently maintained over decades, which allows Krug to recreate its signature style year after year while embracing subtle nuances of each edition.

Now part of the LVMH group, Krug has nevertheless retained its independence of spirit and its artisanal approach. Production remains deliberately limited, quality uncompromising, and every decision driven by taste rather than volume. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée carries an edition number, inviting wine lovers to explore the unique story and composition behind each release.

At Dantec Cellars, Krug represents the pinnacle of Champagne savoir-faire: a house that combines intellectual rigor, patience and emotion to produce wines of profound depth and timeless elegance. Krug Grande Cuvée is not simply a prestige Champagne; it is a benchmark against which all others are measured.
